Personal illness or caregiver responsibilities
Overwhelming debt or responsibilities
I’m quite sure you’ve experienced at least one of these – I know I have survived most of them. All of a sudden, your life needs to be redefined, restructured… simplified. How can you cope?
The word ‘simple’ means “humble, uncomplicated, or fundamental”. Interestingly, ‘simple’ also refers to an herbal medicinal treatment.
So if you want to ‘dose’ your stress away and un-complicate your existence, consider these treatments for a simple life.
Simplify your focus. Center yourself. No matter what happens to you, it does not change who you are. You are valuable – to yourself, to your family and friends. And God still has a good plan for your life (Jer. 29:11). Do not allow events to change your perception of your personal worth.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in more than three decades of service to grieving families, someone always loves and misses the person who died. Take that to heart. No matter what challenges you face, someone loves and values you – not for what you do or have, but just because you are.
Reinforce your sense of value and self-worth through service to others: volunteer, share a hug, offer a listening ear, bake cookies to share. Whatever it is, focus on what you can do, not on what you think you have lost.
Think simple thoughts. Eliminate complex ’round-and-’round thinking, also known as worry. Find positive, uplifting quotes and Bible verses that you can repeat whenever you – or someone near you – gets mentally overwhelmed. Stop the emotion-go-round before it picks up speed.
Use simple words. Extract yourself from an over-busy life by simplifying your schedule. NO is powerful. Say ‘please’ ‘thank you’ and ‘I love you’ often. Gratitude is simple; anger and resentment are not.
